ReNEW Fund

Reinvesting in Nursing Education and Workforce

About the Fund

The ReNEW FundÌýis a partnership between WGU and Social Finance designed to finance nursing education funding gaps and to address critical talent shortages.

How Does It Work?

  1. The Fund helps to cover the cost of the final two years of WGU's BSN Prelicensure program, including the costs of in-person labs and clinical placements, through zero-interest loans.
  2. Nursing students meet ReNEW Employer Partners before graduation. Graduates are incentivized to work for them, since Employer Partners cover their individual payment obligations during employment.
  3. ReNEW Employer Partners hire graduates for full-time nursing roles, paying a fee to the Fund for each hire and at key milestones over the first three years of employment.
  4. The Fund uses ReNEW Employer Partner payments to train more nurses, growing the nursing talent pipeline.

Building a Local Talent Pipeline

WGU’s flexible, hybrid BSN Prelicensure program is expanding across the U.S., producing graduates to help fill local nursing shortages. The ReNEW Fund supports students who would otherwise face financial barriers to pursuing nursing degrees by offering zero-interest loans.

Addressing Critical
Talent Shortages

With over 110,000 lifetime graduates nationwide,† WGU’s Leavitt School of Health is recognized as an important healthcare education leader and talent provider. With support from the Fund, WGU aims to prepare thousands of additional nursing graduates.

ReNEW Fund Example Scenarios

Student 1

Student 1 earns a BSN with FundÌýsupport and joins Employer A, a ReNEW Employer Partner, staying for three years. Employer A makes one payment at hiring and three retention payments at the end of each full year. After three years, Employer A and Student 1 have completed theirÌýobligations to the Fund.

Student 2

Student 2 earns a BSN with Fund support and joins Employer B, a ReNEW Employer Partner, staying for one and a half years. Because Student 2 chose to leave the job before completing three years, Employer B makes one retention payment at hiring, one full payment at the end of year one, and one prorated payment at the end of year two. After leaving Employer B, Student 2 repaysÌýthe remaining loan balance with zero interest.

Student 3

Student 3 earns a BSN with Fund support and joins Employer C, a company not affiliated with the Fund. Since Employer C is not affiliated with the Fund, Student 3 is responsible for making all payments on the zero-interest loan and has no Fund-related financial incentive to stay with Employer C.

WHY BECOME A ReNEW EMPLOYER PARTNER?

Meet Nursing Students Before They Graduate

ReNEW Employer Partners can begin recruiting thousands of nursing students while they are still in school.

Increase Retention

Leaving a ReNEW Employer Partner before three full years means a nurse will become responsible for their own loan payments, incentivizing talent retention.

Safeguard Investment and ROI

ReNEW Employer Partners only make full payments if a nurse reaches retention milestones.

Strengthen the Pipeline of Qualified Nurses

Unlike with staffing agencies, ReNEW Employer Partners' hiring and retention payments go back into the Fund to help train more nurses.

Advance Health Equity

By building a workforce that reflects the communities they serve, ReNEW Employer Partners can help improve quality of care and lessen health disparities.
